Background: To understand the circumstances behind Aoba's birth, you have to understand a little bit about Toue, the man responsible for Aoba's existence. Toue is a man with an unusual outlook on the world. He views life as a game and people as pieces in a game, and he doesn't exclude himself from that. He is a man who pushes limits to an absolutely horrifying degree waiting to see if anyone will stand up and try to stop him. He's performed numerous experiments that violate countless laws, and completely disregards the sanctity of human rights in order to obtain various means to control the human mind.
It shouldn't be surprising that a man willing to cross numerous moral lines would be willing to turn to human experimentation, and create a set of genetically engineered babies with an ability called Scrap that would allow them to enter the consciousness of others with potentially dangerous results. Aoba and his twin brother, Sei, were these babies. The twins were born without any pigmentation and were physically connected to each other by their hair (which had working nerves in it), and died immediately after their birth. When their hair was severed Sei was able to come back from the brink of death, but Aoba was not. A woman named Tae Seragaki was in charge of working on neural research that allowed these twins to be born, though she was unaware of what her research was being used for until Aoba and Sei came into being. When she realized what her work had been used for, and realized it had killed Aoba, she took his body and ran from Toue's company (humbly named Toue Inc.). During her flight from the company Aoba miraculously came back to life.
Tae took Aoba to a church on Midorijima (the island the story takes place on) and left him there. Over the years while being raised at the church Aoba gained pigment and started looking like a normal little boy. While at the church Aoba developed something somewhere between an imaginary friend and a second personality who he would have conversations with when he was lonely. When Aoba was still young he met a man on the beach near the church who Aoba begged to take him home. Respecting the little boy's wishes the man adopted Aoba and became his father, and as fate would have it the woman he was married to happened to be the daughter of Tae Seragaki.
When they brought the boy home Tae realized who he was and accepted that he'd been brought back to her for a reason. The Seragakis were able to become a happy family, and through his life Aoba's memories of all of this seemed to become fuzzy and eventually he outright forgot them. Unfortunately for as happy as they were, Aoba's dad had a bad case of wanderlust and would drag his mom out on adventures with him while only coming home once a year or so. This did offer a good chance for Tae and Aoba to bond with each other and really become a tight knit grandmother and grandson.
Things seemed to proceed well enough for Aoba growing up. He was often bullied for having long hair (not wanting to cut it because the nerves in it meant it hurt to cut off), but made friends with an older boy named Koujaku. The older he got the more independent he got, and the more dangerous the things he involved himself with were. In his teens Aoba began to play a game known as Rhyme.
To explain Rhyme, I have to explain Allmates. It's a pretty simple explanation, however. Allmates are robots that typically come in animal form, and help people perform basic tasks. For example, Aoba's Allmate is a small, blue dog named Ren, who can check his email for him, act as a gps, and other such tasks to make Aoba's day to day life easier.
Rhyme, meanwhile, is a game played inside the mind. The players of Rhyme have to go through specific but simple enough procedures to allow them to play the game in the first place. Once they're registered they are able to fight battles with each other using their Allmates to do the fighting for them. In their mind the Allmate's appearance is different than it is in the real world (for example, Ren appears as a human during Rhyme battles). Attacks in Rhyme register as pain for the player, but no actual damage is inflicted on the player's body.
When Aoba played Rhyme he was a little... less than nice about it. While Aoba wasn't aware of his Scrap powers at the time, he was still capable of using them, and often did on his opponents. He would literally break the minds of the people he fought against, and not think twice about going out and doing it again. Around this time that "imaginary friend"/second personality of Aoba's from childhood realized he had been growing fainter and fainter in Aoba's mind, and when Aoba came across the body of a small Allmate dog (Ren), this part of Aoba's consciousness managed to split away from Aoba and transfer himself into the Allmate, meaning Ren is literally another personality of Aoba's that managed separate sentience and created an existence for himself outside of Aoba's body. As Ren, this part of Aoba could continue to directly speak to real/main Aoba and ensure his advice would be heard.
During his crazy Rhyme romps where Aoba was breaking people's minds, two men named Trip and Virus took notice of his actions. They were enthralled by him, and having their own connection to Toue, dug up his history to find out who he really was. Not wanting anyone else to discover Aoba they arranged an incident that hospitalized his, and allowed his memory of playing Rhyme to erased. The part of Aoba that represented his violent tendencies and inhuman powers then became a separate aspect of Aoba (meaning he now as a third, buried personality).
Things settled down after that. With this more volatile part of himself buried, Aoba's behavior also changed. He grew up, he was able to get a steady job at a junk shop known as Heibon, and even though his closest friends happened to be gang leaders (Mizuki, and his childhood friend, Koujaku), he still had close friends while staying out of Rhyme or gang fights. Aoba's life seemed to be going pretty well until some strange characters started appearing in it.
The first problem was Noiz, a Rhyme player who kept trying to egg Aoba into playing Rhyme again, despite Aoba's insisting he'd never played the game before. Then there was Clear... Clear was a special case. He didn't really cause any immediate problems for Aoba, but boy was he a strange fellow. As weird as these guys were things seemed to be pretty calm for the most part, outside of rumors that a group called Morphine was making young men of the area mysteriously disappear.
That is, things seemed to be calm until Mizuki began behaving oddly, and Tae was abducted. Rushing home to try to find her Aoba himself was abducted and later assaulted by a group called Scratch, run by a man named Mink. During this time Mink revealed that he wanted Aoba's assistance, and agreed to help Aoba find Tae in order to obtain it. They managed to gather a small group consisting of Mink, Koujaku, Clear and Noiz, and head off to an abandoned part of the city to find her. When they do, they also found out that Mizuki and his gang were the ones that kidnapped her in the first place. Confused and upset, Aoba tried to stop Mizuki and accidentally used Scrap on him, entering Mizuki's mind. While there, Mizuki was able to tell him that it was Morphine that had caused all this to happen as well as revealing a plethora of personal issues. During his time inside Mizuki's head Aoba accidentally shattered his friend's mind, and then proceeded to black out.
After waking up and going home, a now successfully rescued Tae gave an exposition dump about Morphine controlling the minds of Mizuki and young men like him, the connection Morphine had to Toue, Toue's schemes and hand in all of this, and the truth about Aoba's powers. It became clear to Aoba that something needed to be done to stop this.
Personality: For a guy with such an unconventional past the present day Aoba is a pretty well adjusted person overall (minus the buried personality). The first thing you should know about Aoba is that he's one of those guys to really go out of his way for his friends and family. When anything happens to his grandmother he immediately drops whatever he's doing to rush to her aid, he worries himself over strange behavior from friends, and even concerns himself with the well being of people who are virtually strangers to him. He's a genuinely caring and good individual.
That said, Aoba can also have a short fuse. It doesn't take a lot to get him worked up into a tizzy. He's fast to get snippy at people when they're ticking him off, and not exactly opposed to violence if he thinks the situation calls for it, though when it comes to physical violence it takes someone pushing some serious buttons to get his fist (or feet) flying. For the most part he settles for snide comments when irritated by silly things, straight forward admission of anger, or a little yelling when he's seriously upset about something.
In general, Aoba tends to be a pretty straight forward guy. He will keep things to himself on occasion, but he follows the principle that honesty is the best policy, and doesn't often hold things back. Even in the cases where Aoba isn't actively voicing his feelings on things it's usually pretty easy to tell what's going on with him. Aoba is the sort of guy to wear his emotions on his sleeves, so he's pretty terrible at hiding his feelings at any given time. If he's angry then he'll be sure to let you know he's angry, if he's happy then the big grin will be a dead give away, and even if he's sad and doesn't seem as ready to discuss what's going on with him, the crestfallen expression and melancholy tone of voice will give him away.
All of his reactions are pretty obvious, for example, embarrassment, and boy does Aoba ever get embarrassed. It's almost unfortunate how easy it can be to fluster Aoba at times. Especially unfortunate when you consider that while Aoba reacts strongly to embarrassing comments people make to him, he's got this nasty little habit of doing the same to other people. Aoba seems to love teasing and prodding his friends, either to get a rise out of them or just to put them into a vaguely uncomfortable situation that he can laugh at. He can be kind of a benevolent dick sometimes. The teasing isn't always well intentioned, however, and sometimes is spurred on by the fact that Aoba is so easily irritated.
The good news, at least, is that Aoba's also very quick to apologize when he goes too far.
He's one of those types that feels guilty at the drop of a hat, and is occasionally prone to small bouts of self-doubt and hate in stressful and emotional situations. It doesn't help that he's unintentionally responsible for some pretty horrible things happening to people, like Mizuki's mind being broken with his powers. Fortunately, Aoba is pretty good at focusing on goals, and keeps himself moving forward when things need to be done, and not falling into the trap of self pity. That doesn't mean that he forgets the negative things that have happened, or that things cannot trigger the guilt at times.
It doesn't help that Aoba is a chronic overthinker. If given time to reflect, he is prone to over-analyzing situations and making things more complicated for himself than he needs to. While he will overthink when things are quiet, during high pressure situations Aoba has a tedency to make some very badly thought out impulse decisions. Heightened emotions cloud his judgment badly, and he's far more likely to do something he'll seriously regret later.
While his common sense sometimes seems to leave him, Aoba is a bright guy overall. In most situations he seems to have a pretty good grasp on what the best course of action would be, or at the very least usually has a pretty reasonable one. He's also pretty handy with technology. Though he's not on the level of some of the other characters in the game, he does all the maintenance on Ren himself. Working at the junk shop also allows him a decent breadth of knowledge when it comes to various mechanical parts.
This is, of course the main part of Aoba that he is conscious of, and there are other clearly defined personalities that exist within him at different points in his life. Ren managed to become his own entity separate from Aoba, but the side of Aoba that emerged when he was playing Rhyme can come out at times like a switch is flipped on Aoba's entire demeanor. This side of Aoba seems to have one main goal, and that is to destroy. He wants to break as many people as pleases him with no regards to the consequences. Throughout the game during high stress situations a voice inside Aoba will speak up and tell him to destroy whoever is causing him problems. While Aoba generally tries to ignore the voice there are times when this other personality emerges completely, and takes control for short periods of time. This part of Aoba will either use Scrap on the person he feels is a threat to stop or completely break them, though there are times when he leaves it at verbal threats.
This part of Aoba is aggressive, forceful, threatening and very dangerous. He is a man who will act on his desires, and considering his desires are to "destroy" that can have some pretty disaster consequences when he appears.
Abilities: Scrap. The power of Scrap allows Aoba to "mix his consciousness in with other people's minds" using his voice as a medium. To put it as simply as possible, he can control people's minds with his voice.
To put in more complicated terms, however...
On a basic level Aoba seems oddly compelling to people when he speaks in a certain tone of voice. For example, when he speaks on the phone with customers it's pretty common for them to ask to meet up with him later. On rare, extreme occasions the customer can even become obsessed with the sound of his voice.
The power does have its uses, however. People often feel more compelled to listen to requests from Aoba, and if Aoba is worked up (or attempting to actively use Scrap) he can compel people to follow his direct orders. In some cases people seem to be aware they're not acting according to their own wishes, in other cases they're clueless to the influence. Aoba can also impress wishes or desires onto another person's mind, and the better he knows someone the more likely it is to work.
Scrap is stronger when Aoba has physical contact with the person he's using it on. At its most powerful Aoba can actually enter into a person's mind, with his consciousness literally mingled with theirs. It is near impossible to shake Aoba off when he's using Scrap this way, but it is risky because if Aoba says the wrong thing he can completely shatter someone's mind.
Alignment: Elios. Aoba's game is largely about him finding romantic love, but even outside of that love of a different sort drives him in the early part of his story. Familial love for his grandmother, and platonic love for his friend Mizuki are what motivate a lot of Aoba's rash actions, and cause him a lot of grief when things go wrong. As for the hate side? The other part of Aoba's personality can be pretty damn hateful.

Emotion Sample:
Keeping down your emotions is a lot easier when you have other people around to distract you from the negative. Sure, you might end up frustrated with someone and causing a little heat wave just as frequently as someone might make you laugh and cause flowers to bloom around you, but as long as no one is doing anything to seriously upset you it all ends up being okay. By yourself, however? That's a different story.
At least, it's a different story when you're Mr. Chronic Overthinker, Aoba Seragaki. Without Ren here to tell Aoba when he's diving too deeply into his own head it has become even harder for Aoba to keep himself in check. When he's out in public usually someone will notice when something is going on with him, and interrupt him before things get too bad, but he's in his own room right now letting the guilt and anxiety flood in.
He has so much to worry about back home, so many big problems to tackle that he isn't sure he can handle in the first place, and he's stuck in another world. That's another problem he's got on top of all the others, and while he's here there's absolutely nothing he can do about Toue. It's frustrating, and it makes Aoba's stomach tie into knots while the light above his bed flickers, and finally goes out completely.
Shit...
He should have seen that one coming, everything in the room has felt wrong for some time now, and the more uneasy he feels the worse the atmosphere in the room gets.
With a frustrated sigh Aoba rolls over onto his side, and presses his face hard into his pillow, his eyes shut tight. The very last thing he needed when he was already feeling so keyed up was to end up in a world like this, where every little emotion makes everything worse. Aoba has never wanted a switch to turn them off more than he has right now.
