» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Aoba Seragaki
Canon & MEDIUM: DRAMAtical Murder | Visual Novel/Game
Canon PULL-POINT: End of the Common Route
Character AGE: 23
Character ABILITIES: Scrap. The power of Scrap allows Aoba to "mix his consciousness in with other people's minds" using his voice as a medium. To put it as simply as possible he can control people's minds with his voice. Of course it's really not that simple though.

On a basic level Aoba's voice just seems oddly compelling to people when he speaks in a certain tone of voice. When he speaks on the phone with customers of the store he works at it's pretty common for the customer to ask to meet up with him later. In some cases it's bad enough that the other person actually becomes obsessed with him and the sound of his voice.

That said his power does have its uses. People often feel more compelled to listen to requests from Aoba, and when Aoba is worked up enough about something (or actively trying to use Scrap) and gives a direct order the person follows his command whether they want to or not. In some cases the person seems to accept Aoba's order as part of their own decision, in other cases the person seems to be aware they're not acting according to their own wishes. Aoba is able to impress deep wishes or desires onto another person's mind, though the more he knows a person the more likely this is to work. If he is in physical contact with the person while using Scrap the connection is stronger and the person cannot shake off what Aoba says to them. You see, the thing is when Aoba is using Scrap to that capacity he actually enters the other person's mind. For awhile his consciousness is very literally inside the other person's head and any actions he takes of words he chooses to say can mean the difference between saving a person and completely breaking their mind.

Aoba's also a capable fighter and in decent physical condition, but nothing unusual for a man his age and size.

Character HISTORY: To understand the circumstances behind Aoba's birth, you have to understand a little bit about Toue, the man responsible for Aoba's existence. Toue is a man with an unusual outlook on the world. He views life as a game and people as pieces in a game, and he doesn't exclude himself from that. He is a man who pushes limits to an absolutely horrifying degree waiting to see if anyone will stand up and try to stop him. He's performed numerous experiments that violate countless laws and completely disregards the sanctity of human rights in order to obtain various means to control the human mind.

It shouldn't be surprising that a man willing to cross lines this bold would turn to human experimentation and create a set of genetically engineered babies with an ability called Scrap. Aoba, and his twin brother, Sei, were these babies. At birth the twins were born without any pigmentation and connected to each other by their hair (which had working nerves in it), and died immediately after their birth. When their hair was severed Sei was able to come back from the brink of death, but Aoba was not. A woman named Tae Seragaki was in charge of working on neural research that allowed these twins to be born, though she was unaware of what her research was being used for until Aoba and Sei came into being. When she realized what her work had been used for, and realized it had killed Aoba she took his body and ran from Toue Inc. in her attempt to flee Aoba miraculously came back to life.

Tae took Aoba to a church on Midorijima (the island the story takes place on) and left him there. Over the years being raised at the church Aoba gained pigment and started looking like a normal little boy. While at the church Aoba developed something somewhere between an imaginary friend and a second personality who he would have conversations with when he was lonely. When Aoba was still young he met a man on the beach near the church who Aoba begged to take him home. Respecting the little boy's wishes the man adopted Aoba and became his father, and as fate would have it the woman he was married to happened to be the daughter of Tae Seragaki.

When they brought the boy home Tae realized who he was and accepted that he'd been brought back to her for a reason. They Seragakis were able to become a happy family, and through his life Aoba's memories of all of this seemed to become fuzzy and eventually he outright forgot them. Unfortunately for as happy as they were, Aoba's dad had a bad case of wanderlust and would drag his mom out on adventures with him while only coming home once a year or so. This did offer a good chance for Tae and Aoba to bond with each other and really become a tight knit grandmother and grandson.

Things seemed to proceed well enough for Aoba growing up. He was often bullied for having long hair (not wanting to cut it because the nerves in it meant it hurt to cut off), but made friends with an older boy named Koujaku. The older he got the more independent he got, and the more dangerous the things he involved himself were. In his teens Aoba began to play a game known as Rhyme.

To explain Rhyme, I have to explain Allmates. It's a pretty simple explanation, however. Allmates are robots that typically come in animal form and help people perform basic tasks. For example, Aoba's Allmate in the game is a small, blue dog named Ren, who can check his email for him, check traffic patterns to see what roads are blocked, and other such tasks to make Aoba's day to day life easier.

That all said lets get into Rhyme! Rhyme is a game played inside the mind. The players of Rhyme have to go through specific but simple enough procedures to allow them to play the game in the first place. Once they're registered they are able to fight battles with each other using their Allmates to do the fighting for them. In their mind the Allmates appearance is different than it is in actuality (for example, Ren appears as a human during Rhyme battles). Attacks in Rhyme register as pain for the player, but no actual damage is inflicted on the player.

When Aoba played Rhyme he was a little... less than nice about it. While Aoba wasn't aware of his Scrap powers at the time he was still capable of using them, and often did on his opponents in Rhyme. He would literally break the minds of the people he fought against and not think twice about going out and doing it again. Around this time that "imaginary friend"/second personality of Aoba's from childhood realized he had been growing fainter and fainter in Aoba's mind, and when Aoba came across the body of a small Allmate dog (Ren), this part of Aoba's consciousness managed to split away from Aoba and transfer himself into the Allmate, meaning Ren is literally another personality of Aoba's that somehow managed to create a separate existence for himself. As Ren this part of Aoba could continue to directly speak to Aoba and ensure his advice would be heard.

During his crazy Rhyme romps where he was breaking people's minds two men named Trip and Virus took notice of Aoba's actions. They were enthralled by him and dug up his history to find out who he really was. Not wanting anyone else to discover Aoba they arranged an incident that hospitalized Aoba and allowed his memory of playing Rhyme to erased. The part of Aoba that represented his violent tendencies and inhuman powers then became a separate aspect of Aoba (meaning he now as a third, buried personality still living in his head).

Things settled down after that. With this more volatile part of himself buried Aoba's behavior also changed. He grew up, he was able to get a steady job at a junk shop known as Heibon, and even though his closest friends happened to be gang leaders he still had close friends while staying out of Rhyme or gang fights. Aoba's life seemed to be going pretty well until some strange characters started appearing in it.

The first problem was Noiz, a Rhyme player who kept trying to egg Aoba into playing Rhyme again despite Aoba's insisting he'd never played the game before. Then there was Clear... Clear was a special case. He didn't really cause any immediate problems for Aoba, but boy was he a strange fellow. And of course the friends Aoba already had, Koujaku, his childhood friend (and a gang leader), and Mizuki (also a gang leader). As weird as these guys were things seemed to be pretty calm for the most part besides Mizuki voicing worry about a group called Morphine that was rumored to be making young men of the area mysteriously disappear.

That is, things seemed to be calm until Mizuki began behaving oddly and Tae was abducted. Rushing home to try to find her Aoba himself gets abducted by a group called Scratch run by a man named Mink. During this time Mink reveals that he wants Aoba's assistance, and agrees in turn to help Aoba find Tae. They manage to gather a small group consisting of Mink, Koujaku, Clear and Noiz and head off to an abandoned part of the city to find her where it is revealed that Mizuki and his gang are the ones that kidnapped Tae. Confused and upset Aoba tries to stop Mizuki and accidentally uses Scrap on him, entering Mizuki's mind. While there Mizuki is able to tell him that it is the group Morphine that has caused all this to happen, and without meaning to during his questioning Aoba shatters Mizuki's mind and blacks out.

A now successfully rescued Tae gives an exposition dump about Morphine controlling the mind of Mizuki and young men like him, their connection to Toue and his hand in all of this, and the truth about Aoba's powers. And since Aoba's canon point is from shortly after this exposition dump and his future becomes a choose your own adventure dealio after that... this is the end of the history section!

Character PERSONALITY: For a guy with such an unconventional past the present day Aoba is a pretty well adjusted person overall minus some serious psychological disorders, but we'll get to all of that later! The first thing you should know about Aoba is that he's one of those guys to really go out of his way for his friends and family. When anything happens to his grandmother he immediately drops whatever he's doing to rush to her aid, he worries himself over strange behavior from friends he's known for a long time, and even concerns himself with the well being of people he hasn't known for long. He's a genuinely caring and good individual.

That said, Aoba also has a pretty short fuse. It doesn't take a lot to get him worked up into a tizzy. He's fast to snap at people when they're ticking him off, and unfortunately a little too quick to throw punches sometimes when he's angry as well. Though when it comes to physical violence it takes someone pushing buttons they shouldn't be, or a special brand of goofy and over the top behavior that seems to really irritate Aoba. For the most part he settles for snide comments when irritated by silly things, and a sort of straight forward admission of anger to outright yelling when he's seriously upset about something.

In general Aoba tends to be a pretty straight forward guy. Though he will keep things to himself on occasion he seems to be under an honesty being the best policy point of view, and doesn't often hold things back. Even in the cases where Aoba isn't actively voicing his feelings on things it's usually pretty easy to tell what's going on with him. Aoba is the sort of person to wear his emotions on his sleeves, and he's pretty terrible at hiding his feelings at any given time. If he's angry he'll be sure to let you know he's angry, if he's happy the big grin will be a dead give away, and even if he's sad and doesn't seem as ready to discuss what's going on with him the crestfallen expression and melancholy tone of voice will raise a red flag to his emotions.

Like his embarrassment, and boy does Aoba ever get embarrassed. It's almost unfortunate how easy it can be to fluster Aoba at times. Especially unfortunate when you consider that while Aoba reacts strongly to embarrassing comments people make to him, he's got this nasty little habit of doing the same to other people. Aoba seems to love teasing and prodding his friends either to get a rise out of them or just to put them into a vaguely uncomfortable situation that he can laugh at. He can be kind of a benevolent dick sometimes. Though the teasing isn't always well intentioned and looping back to the easily irritated part of his personality, Aoba's pretty fast to turn to sarcasm in order to get his annoyance across to people. Sometimes it's meant to be fun teasing, sometimes he's actually trying to be obnoxious.

The good news about all that is that Aoba's also very quick to apologize when he goes too far. He's one of the types of people to feel guilt at the drop of a hat, and while it's not usually something to stick he's prone to small bouts of self-resentment in bad situations. It doesn't help that he's unintentionally responsible for some pretty horrible things happening to people, like Mizuki's mind being broken with his powers. Aoba is pretty good at focusing on goals and keeping himself from falling into self pity and pushing forward with what needs to be done, but that doesn't mean he's forgets the guilt and that when reminders come along he doesn't still struggle with those feelings.

On top of that Aoba is the type to overthink things. If given time to reflect, he is prone to over-analyzing situations and making things more complicated for himself than he needs to. Despite his tendency to overthink when time allows, under pressure Aoba has a tendency to make some very, very badly thought out impulse decisions. Almost every time he makes a really bad call it's because his emotions are too heightened. At times he'll rush to action when he shouldn't thanks to that hot temper of his, other times when he's worked up and upset about things he can do some dangerously stupid things even in calmer situations.

While his common sense sometimes seems to leave him, Aoba is a bright guy overall. In most situations he seems to have a pretty good grasp on what the best course of action would be, or at the very least usually has a pretty reasonable one. He's also pretty handy with technology. Though he's not on the level of some of the other characters in the game, he does all the maintenance on Ren himself, which is nothing to sneeze at. Working at the junk shop also allows him a decent breadth of knowledge when it comes to various mechanical parts as well.

And all of this is just part of Aoba. While the game never makes it clear if he has Dissociative Identity Disorder or not, he does clearly have more than one personality inside his head. While Ren becomes a separate entity all of his own before the game even starts, the other side of Aoba that he broke away from after he stopped playing Rhyme is still very much there as a part of him. This side of Aoba seems to have one main goal, and that is to destroy. To break as many people as he wants with no regards to the consequences. Throughout the game during high stress situations a voice inside Aoba will speak up and tell him to destroy whoever is causing him problems. While Aoba generally tries to ignore the voice there are times when this other personality emerges completely and takes control for short periods of time. Generally speaking the personality with either use Scrap on the person he feels is a threat to get them to stop or completely break them, though there are times when he just makes threats without actually acting in the moment.

This part of Aoba is aggressive, forceful, threatening and very dangerous. He is a man who will act on his desires, and considering his desires are to "destroy" that can have some pretty disaster consequences when he appears.

Chosen WEAPON: A knee high hard toed boot with grieves built into them. As someone who fights mainly with kicks just the basic design of the boots will allow him to deal out more damage, but the evolution has nothing to do with the tough material of the boots.

As Aoba wears the boots around he'll realize that when he's in a hurry he'll tend to run a little faster than usual. When he's got to hop over a puddle in the ground he'll jump a little further than he thought he could. It'll all be small things at first, but the boots will enhance the speed and strength in his legs. At first it'll be barely noticeable, but as time goes on the boots will allow him to make superhuman jumps and run at a speed impossible for a normal human. The boots are limited to what his body is capable of handling though. No matter how much the boots evolve Aoba will never be able to run at speeds that would literally damage his body because of the force.
Character INVENTORY: The clothing on his back and a fresh bottle of pills that suppress his powers.

First PERSON: [ The feed cuts onto a hastily doodled image of a blue pomeranian. It's not the best drawing in the world, but it's pretty clear what it was meant to be at least. ]

Since he didn't show up with me I doubt it, but has anyone seen an Allmate that looks like this anywhere around here? His name is Ren.

[ A small sigh before the camera shifts up and around so Aoba's face comes into view. ]

Ah, now that I think about it, this world doesn't seem like it even has Allmates in the first place. Should explain what Allmates are in case anyone finds him? [ Looking off the the side, brows furrowed. ] Or would that be pointless?

[ Looking back at the camera. ] If you find him Ren should be able to talk and can explain the situation to you. Honestly, he'd probably give a better explanation than I would.
Third PERSON: Musebox thread.

Alternatively if that's not acceptable, I also have a Test Drive Meme thread.
